In
the beginning of the 90's there was only one address
in Helsinki you needed to know. Seven nights a week
the legendary nightclub Nylon was packing the people
in with the exiting mixture of dancefloor / acid jazz
& trip hop, colliding with the emerging sounds of
jungle & drum&bass. It was one night at this
club that eventually led to the birth of nine2five recordings.
Meeting DJ Goose (Pasi Saarinen), then a resident dj
at the club, Juha soon found out they shared the same
interest in music. Teaming up they deejayed together
for the best part of the 90's, with numerous memorable
residencies at clubs such as Nylon & Kerma, and
hosting the awarded shows on the nationwide YLEX &
Radiomafia radio stations. Hooking up with Nenis (Sami
Nenola), the skater-turned-dj, they promoted nights
with the likes of Massive Attack, Howie B, Roni Size,
Gilles Peterson & London Elektricity, before eventually
setting up nine2five recordings at the end of 2000.
With critical acclaim in the international music press
- Jockey Slut, DJ Magazine, Knowledge, Straight No Chaser,
Breakin' Point etc. - and enthusiastic dj support from
the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mr. Scruff, Rainer Truby,
Roni Size, London Elektricity, Aquasky, Howie B, Adam
Freeland, Landslide and many more nine2five recordings
has quickly established itself as the creative source
for fresh talent emerging from the North. Artists on
nine2five - such as DharmaOne, The Executives, Infekto
and Robbyn Rhodes - have also notched up releases and
remixes on such great labels as Compost, Hospital, Stereo
Deluxe, Passenger and Moving Shadow.
